Dr Peter Cistulli is Professor of Respiratory Medicine and the Foundation Head of the Discipline of Sleep
Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, University of Sydney, Australia. He is an active clinician with more than 20
years’ experience in pulmonary and sleep medicine, and is head of the Department of Respiratory and
Sleep Medicine at Royal North Shore Hospital in Sydney. His research has focused on the pathophysiology
of Obstructive Sleep Apnoea and dental therapies for management. A feature of the work has
been the conduct of rigorous clinical trials examining the role of oral appliances in the management of
OSA. This work has been predominantly funded by the National Health and Medical Research Council of
Australia, and he has been granted over $10 million in competitive research funding. This has resulted in
over 100 publications that have contributed to the advancement the field.
His academic contributions to the field of dental sleep medicine have been recognised through the
awarding of the Pierre Robin and Honorary Member Awards from the American Academy of Dental
Sleep Medicine. He is a former President of the Australasian Sleep Association. He holds a number of
editorial positions on international sleep journals. He currently serves on the board of directors of the
Sleep Health Foundation (Australia), whose mission is to raise community awareness of the negative
impact of untreated sleep disorders and poor sleep practices on health, safety, productivity and quality
of life.
