Reconstruction of the mandible is necessary after bone loss due totumour resection, trauma or severe infection. Primary restaurationshould be the aim especially after tumour ablation. Different optionsare available ranging from bridging plates, free and vascularized bonegrafts, e.g. from the hip, fibula or scapula to individualized custom madereconstruction implants.Secondary reconstruction, e.g. after plate penetration or afterosteonecrosis is often a challenge and the poor tissue conditionsneed to be addressed. Here prefabricated bony flap or in future tissueengineered bone grafts offer an additional option.

Prof Günter Lauer is currently the Professor and Head of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the University Hospital Carl Gustav Carus Dresden, Technische Universität Dresden in Germany. Prior to this position he was the Deputy Head, Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, University Hospital Carl Gustav Carus Dresden, Technische Universität Dresden – Germany (2000-2009) and then Professor of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Medical University Vienna, Austria (2009-2011). He received his medical degree at the University of Heidelberg, Germany and then his dental degree at the University of Freiburg, Germany. In 2008 he was a Founding Member and Head of the trans-disciplinary Workshop for Regenerative Medicine within the German Society of Dental Oral and Maxillo Medicine (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Zahn- Mund- und Kieferheilkunde). Prof Lauer has a special interest in Traumatology – Primary Treatment and Secondary Corrections, Cleft Lip and Palate, Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine and Secondary Reconstruction in Tumor Surgery.
